Endoscopy

Providing valuable diagnostic information

Endoscopy

At Alma Veterinary Hospital we are lucky enough to have a variety of flexible and rigid endoscopes. These small cameras allow us to closely view and biopsy internal organs with minimal surgical intervention.

Flexible Endoscopy

Our flexible gastroscope enables us to view and biopsy the inside of your pet's digestive tract providing valuable additional diagnostic information. We are able to examine the oesophagus, stomach and parts of the small intestine and colon.

The respiratory tract of cats and dogs can also be examined using our flexible bronchoscope and a bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). This is often performed at the same time. This enables us to obtain samples of cells from within the lungs. We would use this procedure to investigate the cause of symptoms such as coughing.

Laparoscopy

Our rigid endoscope enables us to perform laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery such as key-hole bitch spays, liver biopsies, removal of abdominal testicles and prophylactic gastropexies in large dogs prone to GDV (twisted stomach). We can also use our smaller scopes to view the inside of the nose (rhinoscopy) and ear (otoscopy).

Laparoscopic procedures are highly beneficial as they require smaller incisions therefore lowering the surgical risk, resulting in less pain for the animal and a quicker recovery.
